This floor makes me very happy, though most of the time it's a scuffed, dirty mess. I'm not a floor person by nature (just ask my husband—I don't notice the grime)—but I do feel really happy about the fact of this floor.
This is because my last studio floor I installed from leftover tongue and groove flooring that I didn't have experience installing, and while it started out great, it slowly came apart, and it was also laid over uneven concrete, so to walk over it felt like you were pitching around on a boat deck in a stormy sea.
When we found this studio, one of the first things that I liked about the empty shell of the space was how flat and even the concrete had been poured. Because of the wavy floor before, I took special care to do this one right. My friend Patrick and I spent a very long day installing the subflooring (dri core), and then I put in the plywood sheets above it. The floor has stayed solidly in place, with a satisfying subtle spring from the rubber base of the subfloor, and though I drip on and scuff it all the day long, it is solid. I painted it 'alpaca,' which is a nice neutral choice, and a light color to keep the space light, but it also means it's visibly dirty AF.
The combination of a wood stove and the studio floor being light means too that ash and wood crumblies are everywhere and find me giving a brief sweep on the days when I have my shit more together or I'm just not yet ready to go into any work—to sweep off, brush off—is a way of waking up, and though it is technically a chore, and one I'm lazy to do, it's a good way to move energy and wake things up on this foundational surface that supports the creative work of the studio.
