These scissors were a gift from my mother a few years back, and they are an old-school, well-made delight. They are made for only paper. Meaning that if I use them for tapes, cloth, or heavy material, I am compromising their integrity; the blades will dull, and they won't be able to perform well for me.
These types of scissors were used in editing and layout practices—I believe and surmise—of newspaper rooms, to cut out and position paper text blocks. The long blades make it possible to get a much better straight cut than the short blade we generally use with all-purpose scissors today. I use these scissors to work on large collage or to cut paper off big rolls. These kinds of tools are a real pleasure to use and make me think about the world of well-made things from the past. By enjoying them in my own practices today, it feels like I get to keep these traditions alive in a small way.
